Omega 3 DHA or DHA+EPA: which vegan omega-3 should you choose?
Omega 3 DHA provides 250 mg of DHA per capsule; Omega 3 DHA+EPA provides 280 mg of omega-3: 210 mg of DHA and 70 mg of EPA.
The difference lies in the EPA content and the associated health claims. No, Ekopura Omega 3 DHA has no fishy taste or aftertaste, and the capsules are small and easy to swallow.
Algae oil is neutral in smell and taste; you won’t get the fishy aftertaste that fish oil can sometimes leave. You simply swallow the capsule in one go with a meal, so flavourings or fragrances are neither necessary nor added. What is the Totox value of this algae oil, and why is it important?
The Totox value of Ekopura Omega 3 DHA is around 4 to 6, depending on the batch, and indicates the oil’s degree of oxidation.
A lower number means fresher oil. The voluntary GOED guideline for omega-3 oil sets a maximum of 26, and we are well below that; there is no statutory EU standard for Totox. The oil is protected against oxidation with mixed tocopherols (vitamin E) and rosemary extract. No, Ekopura Omega 3 DHA is not certified organic; the algae are cultivated in a closed system and the capsules are manufactured in Romania.
The oil is derived from the microalgae Schizochytrium sp., and the closed system keeps out external influences. Store Ekopura Omega 3 DHA in a dry place at room temperature, away from direct sunlight and out of the reach of children; on delivery, it has a minimum shelf life of 12 months.
Keep the packaging tightly closed; room temperature is 15 to 25 °C. The use-by date is printed on the back of the packaging, at the bottom. In practice, the shelf life is often longer than 12 months, so you can order several packs at once.
