A strawberry matcha latte is an iced matcha latte with strawberry. There’s strawberry purée in the bottom of the glass, then ice and cold milk, with a layer of matcha on top. You need 1 g of matcha, a handful of strawberries and about 150 ml of milk. The latte tastes fresh and fruity from the strawberries, and the matcha adds its smooth flavour.
What do you need for a strawberry matcha latte?
For 1 glass:
- 80 g strawberries, fresh or defrosted from frozen
- 1 to 2 teaspoons maple syrup or honey
- 1 g Organic Matcha Powder (half a teaspoon)
- 30 ml cold water
- ice cubes
- about 150 ml cold milk or plant-based drink
How do you make a strawberry matcha latte?
- Mash the strawberries with the syrup into a coarse purée, or blitz them briefly with a hand blender.
- Spoon the strawberry purée into the bottom of a glass.
- Fill the glass with ice and pour about 150 ml of cold milk or plant-based drink over it.
- Whisk 1 g of matcha until smooth in 30 ml of cold water and pour it slowly over the milk.
Stir everything together before you drink it. For neatly separated layers, pour the milk and the matcha slowly over the back of a spoon.
How do you make strawberry purée for matcha?
Mash 80 g of strawberries with 1 to 2 teaspoons of maple syrup or honey into a coarse purée. Fresh strawberries with a little syrup keep the flavour fresh, and you decide how sweet it gets. Strawberry jam is quicker, but it makes the latte sweeter. If you go for jam, use a tablespoon and leave out the syrup.
Frozen strawberries work well. Defrost them first: they’re easier to mash and release more juice.
Variations
- Vegan: use oat or soya drink and maple syrup. Ekopura Organic Matcha Powder is registered with The Vegan Society.
- With protein: shake a serving of plant-based vanilla protein powder with the cold milk in a shaker before you pour the milk over the ice. There’s more on this in our protein matcha latte recipe.
- Strawberry and banana: mash a few slices of banana with the strawberries for a creamier, sweeter base.
- Less sweet: leave out the syrup. For many people, ripe strawberries are sweet enough.
Leave out the strawberries and you have a classic iced matcha latte. You’ll find more ideas in our matcha recipes.
How many calories and how much caffeine are in a strawberry matcha latte?
Made with 150 ml of semi-skimmed milk, 80 g of strawberries and 2 teaspoons of maple syrup, a glass has about 130 kcal. The matcha provides about 3 kcal of that. A glass made with 1 g of matcha contains about 32 mg of caffeine.
Frequently asked questions
Can you use frozen strawberries in a strawberry matcha latte?
Yes. Defrost them first, so they’re easier to mash. You can also blitz them straight from the freezer with a hand blender and a splash of milk.
Can you drink a strawberry matcha latte hot?
You can, but the cold version is more usual. Warm milk on strawberry purée tastes less fresh, and the layers run into each other more quickly.
Can you make a strawberry matcha latte in advance?
You can make the strawberry purée a day ahead and keep it covered in the fridge. Don’t whisk the matcha until just before you drink it, so it stays bright green.
Which milk or plant-based drink works best in a strawberry matcha latte?
Semi-skimmed or whole milk gives a creamy latte. Oat drink is slightly sweeter and also creamy, while soya drink tastes more neutral. Almond drink is lighter and lets the strawberry come through more.
