Ekopura Vegan Chocolate is a completely plant-based, chocolate-flavoured protein powder containing 71% protein, made from peas and broad beans. This gives it a high protein content.
The protein base consists of pea protein isolate and broad bean protein isolate; cocoa powder and a natural flavouring provide the flavour, and it is sweetened with steviol glycosides. A 500-gram bag contains 20 servings. The product is suitable for vegetarians and vegans; you can find the other flavours in our range of vegan protein powders.
In the EU, approved health claims regarding muscle mass and bones apply to proteins, including plant-based ones; one serving of Ekopura Vegan Chocolate provides 17.75 grams of protein.
Protein contributes to a growth in muscle mass.
Protein contributes to the maintenance of muscle mass.
Protein contributes to the maintenance of normal bones.
These claims apply to foods that are a source of protein: at least 12 per cent of the energy must come from protein. In the case of this powder, that figure is well over 70 per cent. A varied, balanced diet and a healthy lifestyle are important.
A 25-gram serving of Ekopura Vegan Chocolate provides 17.75 grams of protein, which is 71 per cent of the powder.
In addition, each serving contains 2.3 grams of fat, 0.83 grams of carbohydrates, 1.1 grams of fibre and 0.54 grams of salt. The entire serving amounts to 99 kcal, with protein accounting for the largest proportion of this.
The European reference intake for protein is 50 grams per day. As a guideline, you should aim for approximately 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day; if you exercise a lot, this figure can quickly add up: this is how you calculate your protein requirements.
Vegan protein powder and whey both provide protein; the difference lies in the source, and plant-based protein contains no milk and therefore no lactose.
Whey and casein come from milk, whilst this powder is derived from peas and broad beans. The source does not matter for the approved protein claims: these apply to protein, regardless of where it comes from. Choose plant-based if you follow a vegan diet, want to avoid milk or simply prefer plant-based options. Ekopura Vegan Chocolate is 71% protein; our other protein powders range from 75% to 84%.
Ekopura Vegan Chocolate tastes of chocolate, containing cocoa powder (6%) and a natural flavouring, and the powder is sugar-free.
No sugar has been added; the powder contains naturally occurring sugars, 0.03 grams per serving. It is sweetened with steviol glycosides, a sweetener derived from the stevia leaf. You can try it first with a 25-gram sample, exactly one serving.
It naturally contains a small amount of caffeine, 0.006 per cent of the powder, from the cocoa powder and not added, much less than in a cup of coffee or tea. If you are sensitive to caffeine or consume it late in the day, please bear this in mind.
Mix two tablespoons of Ekopura Vegan Chocolate (25 grams) with 250 ml of water, milk or a plant-based drink in a shaker or blender.
Shake or blend until the shake is creamy; it will be smoother in a blender than in a shaker, and using just a spoon is more likely to leave lumps. It mixes more smoothly with a plant-based drink than with water. There is no measuring spoon included in the packet: two level tablespoons make one serving, and a separate stainless-steel measuring spoon is available to buy. You can also mix the powder into porridge, yoghurt or a smoothie; you’ll find ideas in our smoothie recipes.
You can take 1 to 3 portions of 25 grams of Ekopura Vegan Chocolate per day, spread throughout the day.
There is no set time to take it: many people have a shake after exercise, with breakfast or as a snack. A dietary supplement is not a substitute for a varied diet.
It can be combined with our daily essentials, such as magnesium and omega-3, and our other protein powders; please adhere to the recommended daily intake for each product. This powder is a source of protein, not a vitamin or mineral supplement, so you won’t be getting any duplicate nutrients from another Ekopura product. However, you should do take into account any multivitamins or supplements from other brands.
Ekopura Vegan Chocolate’s protein sources come from Europe: yellow pea protein isolate (65 per cent) and broad bean protein isolate (25 per cent).
Together, peas and broad beans provide all nine essential amino acids, as pea protein and broad bean protein complement each other. These include the three branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs): leucine, isoleucine and valine. ‘Isolate’ means that the protein has been concentrated from the legume, resulting in a high protein content. The cocoa powder is included for flavour and does not provide any significant amount of protein.
Ekopura Vegan Chocolate contains five ingredients: pea protein isolate 65 per cent, broad bean protein isolate 25 per cent, cocoa powder 6 per cent, natural flavouring 3.5 per cent and sweetener (steviol glycosides). No sugar has been added; the 0.03 grams of sugar per serving is naturally present in the raw ingredients. It contains no colourings, preservatives or artificial sweeteners.
No, Ekopura Vegan Chocolate is not certified organic. Among other things, it contains steviol glycosides as a sweetener, and these are not permitted in organic food. Our protein powders Whey Natural Organic, Casein Organic and Vegan Protein Organic are, however, certified organic.
No, Ekopura Vegan Chocolate does not contain any of the fourteen allergens that must be declared by law in the EU.
The ingredients are pea protein isolate, broad bean protein isolate, natural flavouring, cocoa powder and steviol glycosides. So it contains no milk and therefore no lactose. Pulses such as peas and broad beans are not among the fourteen common allergens, but may still cause a reaction in some people. If you have a food allergy or intolerance, please consult your doctor or dietitian.
No, there are no EU-approved health claims for protein relating to weight loss, satiety or weight management.
The approved protein claims relate to muscle mass and bones, not weight. A protein shake does, however, increase your total protein intake without adding too many extra calories: a 25-gram serving of Ekopura Vegan Chocolate provides 17.75 grams of protein at 99 kcal, and these count towards your daily intake. If you have a weight goal, discuss it with a dietitian or your GP.
If you are using Ekopura Vegan Chocolate with children, during pregnancy or whilst breastfeeding, please consult a healthcare professional first. The dosage is intended for adults. Children require a different dose; please consult your GP, pharmacist or child health clinic for advice. If using the powder form, a smaller portion may be appropriate; please discuss this with one of them.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, please consult your midwife, GP or pharmacist. In both cases, explain the ingredients: pea protein isolate, broad bean protein isolate, natural flavouring, cocoa powder and steviol glycosides, and mention that the cocoa powder naturally contains a small amount of caffeine, 0.006% of the powder.
Store Ekopura Vegan Chocolate tightly closed at room temperature, out of direct sunlight and out of reach of children.
The best before date is at the bottom of the packaging. We guarantee a minimum shelf life of twelve months. It does not need the fridge; a dry kitchen cupboard is fine. Close the pouch properly after every use, so that no moisture can get in: moisture makes the powder clump.
Yes, you can order Ekopura Vegan Chocolate on subscription with 5% off, and you can adjust, pause or cancel the subscription without obligation.
You choose from five delivery frequencies: every month, or every two, three, four or six months. Postponing a delivery, changing the frequency or switching products are possible too, and you can cancel whenever you want. If you use one serving a day, a pouch of 20 servings is about twenty days.
In the Netherlands and Belgium the delivery time is 1 to 2 working days, and an order placed before 22:00 on a working day is as a rule there the next day.
Orders placed at the weekend are as a rule delivered on Tuesday. Shipping costs 3.99 euros in the Netherlands and 4.99 euros in Belgium, and in those two countries it is free from an order value of 25 euros (the amount after discount counts). Current delivery times, shipping costs and free shipping thresholds per country are on our shipping page.
