What’s in Ekopura whey protein?

Last updated:

Ekopura is gezonde whey met zuivere ingredienten

Ekopura Whey is based on grass-fed whey protein, with a short list of ingredients and no unnecessary additives. The plain variety is pure whey protein; the flavoured varieties contain only natural cocoa or vanilla and a small amount of stevia. No artificial sweeteners, no colourings, no fillers.

Where does the whey protein come from?

The whey in Ekopura Whey comes from grass-fed cows in southern Germany and the Alpine region. Whey is a natural by-product of cheese production: when cheese is made, a protein-rich liquid remains, which is filtered, skimmed and dried into a fine powder.

Grass-fed means that the cows eat mainly grass and roughage rather than concentrate feed. We have deliberately chosen this source because it supports a transparent supply chain, where you know exactly where your protein comes from. The natural whey also carries the organic label (SKAL), which means that its production meets the European requirements for organic farming.

What has and hasn’t been added?

Ekopura whey has a clean label: only what is necessary for the protein and flavour, and nothing else. It contains no artificial sweeteners, colourings, flavour enhancers or fillers.

The cocoa flavour comes directly from the cocoa bean and the vanilla flavour from natural vanilla. For a touch of sweetness, we use a small amount of stevia (steviol glycosides), so no sugar and no artificial sweeteners. The powder is also non-GMO, soya-free and gluten-free, with no refined sugar. This composition is exactly what a short, transparent list of ingredients entails: you can trace every component, and there’s nothing in there that doesn’t need to be there.

How much protein does Ekopura whey provide?

The protein content is high: the natural whey contains around 80% protein, the Smooth Cacao around 76% and the Refreshing Vanilla around 78%. This makes every serving a source of protein.

Protein contributes to a growth in muscle mass. Protein contributes to the maintenance of muscle mass. Protein contributes to the maintenance of normal bones. How much protein you need each day depends on your body weight, your age and how active you are. What whey protein varieties does Ekopura offer?

There are three whey varieties: natural, Smooth Cacao and Refreshing Vanilla. They all share the same grass-fed whey base and the same clean-label approach; the main difference lies in the flavour.

The natural variant is certified organic and contains no added flavourings or sweeteners, which is handy if you want to mix it yourself with, for example, fruit or oat milk. The Smooth Cacao and Refreshing Vanilla varieties are flavoured with natural flavourings and lightly sweetened with stevia; these two are clean-label but not certified organic. All three can be found in the whey collection.

How do you use Ekopura whey protein?

A typical serving is around 25 to 30 grams of powder, shaken or stirred with water or (plant-based) milk. Whey dissolves quickly and has a neutral to mild flavour, making it easy to incorporate into your diet.

You can also mix the plain variety into yoghurt, quark, porridge or a smoothie without adding any flavouring. The cocoa and vanilla varieties are ideal for a post-workout shake or as a snack on a busy day. There’s no single time of day that’s better than another: it’s best to spread your protein intake throughout the day.

Who is whey protein suitable for?

Whey is suitable for anyone who wants to increase their protein intake and tolerates dairy well. It’s popular with athletes because of its high protein content, but it’s just as useful as a supplement to a busy or unbalanced diet.

As whey is a dairy product, it’s suitable for vegetarians but not for vegans. If you want to follow a plant-based diet, you might want to look into vegan protein made from fava beans. And if you’d like to understand exactly what whey is and how it’s made, read our guide on ‘What is whey protein and what does it do?’.
